Mr. Janus SchaumkelOrthopaedic SurgeonHip & Knee Joint Specialist

Janus Schaumkel is a New Zealand trained orthopaedic surgeon. He specialises in hip and knee joint replacements, and sports knee arthroscopy and reconstructive surgery, in particular ACL reconstruction. He has 14 years of experience in fulltime private practice, and has modern consulting rooms conveniently based in Greenlane, central Auckland. The benefit of being a fulltime private surgeon means that he is more available for his patients, and has a more flexible timetable that keeps his waiting time to be seen as short as possible (currently, two to three weeks).

Janus was born and raised in Auckland. He graduated from Auckland Medical School in 1997. Following this he successfully completed the advanced surgical training program of the New Zealand Orthopaedic Association, and gained his specialist qualification FRACS (Ortho) in 2005.

Janus subsequently had extensive specialised knee and hip fellowship training overseas. Firstly, he had 18 months in London, UK, where he worked closely with surgeon experts and leaders, including Mr Tim Briggs and Mr Steve Cannon, at the The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital , and Mr Andy Williams, then Chelsea Football Club knee surgeon, at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.

He then spent 6 months in Perth, Western Australia, at the Perth Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Centre with leaders Dr Peter Annear and Dr Jens Buelow, where he trained in knee and shoulder arthroscopic surgery, and computer-assisted knee surgery.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (FRACS), Fellow of the New Zealand Orthopaedic Association (NZOA), Member of the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS), and International Affiliate Member of American Academy Of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS).

Janus focuses on the surgical treatment of hip and knee arthritis and sports knee reconstruction. He utilises modern surgical techniques, in combination with advanced anaesthetic care and patient specific post-operative rehabilitation. He performs state-of-the-art computer-assisted knee replacement surgery, and will be soon performing robotic assisted surgery.

He is married with three teenaged children. He is also proud of his Tongan/German heritage and sees himself as a role model for young Pasifika people.

Janus is very personable and likes to take the time to learn and understand exactly what the patient’s problem is, and what their goals of treatment are. He will personalize the care and surgical treatment for each patient to optimise their care, in order to get the best result for them.
